Biography
Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Claudius Phaedrus studied painting and fine art at the San Francisco Art Institute and Cornish College of the Arts, later earning a bachelor’s degree in Japanese language from the University of Hawaii. Early in his career, he was heavily involved in street art, which shaped his unique style. He has curated numerous exhibitions, both solo and group, and collaborated with galleries internationally.
He first started showing artwork on the streets, then began exhibiting in bars and cafes. Local art galleries soon took notice, leading to collaborations in Seattle. As his reputation grew, he began receiving offers for international shows. In 2021, Enceladus LLC was founded to streamline the business and enable 24/7 international sales. In 2022 and 2023, he produced and curated three pop-up art shows in Seattle. After recovering from a life-threatening illness in late 2023, he is now focused on expanding and establishing a permanent art gallery location in Tokyo.
“I'd like to think of my artwork as avant-garde. I really enjoy creating work that feels new and unique, not only in its visual aesthetic but also in the story and concept behind it. I love the process of imagining something and how it would look, then making it a physical reality—it feels like magic to me. I studied a lot of conceptual art in school, and honestly, I’ve grown a bit tired of it. I want to make artwork that is loud, exciting, fun, engaging, and thought-provoking.
I’m also weary of how many art galleries and museums feel stagnant and bland—there’s never any music, just the creepy echo of whispering voices bouncing off the walls as you walk through. I feel like people have forgotten that art doesn’t need to be super serious to be meaningful. One of the most important lessons we can learn from the street art and graffiti revolution is that art can be fun, wild, colorful, and exciting.
I want to take that excitement, add some depth, and bring it into the fine art world. Artists like Lichtenstein, Dali, Picasso, Warhol, and Takashi Murakami have paved the way for fun and exciting fine art, but I believe there’s still plenty of room to grow and create an even more interactive, vibrant art experience. Artists like Faile, FriendsWithYou, Felipe Pantone, and Barry McGee are really leading the way in this regard and are a huge inspiration for me.”
